Vol. 328 No. 15

Written Answers. - Killarney Estate.

194.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will arrange with Killarney UDC to take over the Countess Grove estate in Killarney and bring the estate up to standard in respect of all services including water, sewerage, roads, car parking and domestic scavenging, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The taking in charge of housing estates is a matter for the local authority and I have no function in it. In regard to Countess Grove estate I understand from Killarney Urban District Council that since 1979 they have been endeavouring to have the estate completed by the developer so that it could be taken in charge. Some minor works were carried out in 1980 and legal proceedings are being initiated by the council against the developer under the Local Government (Planning and Development) Acts to secure the completion of outstanding works. I understand that refuse collection is carried out on the estate by the council. As the Deputy is no doubt aware, I have introduced a scheme of assistance for local authorities to enable them to complete housing estates where all efforts to secure their completion have failed. Local authorities have been informed (5 May 1981) of the criteria which apply to the scheme and have been asked to submit information on eligible cases for examination.
