The provision of cable systems in any of the cities and towns outside the present multi-channel area will be a major undertaking and will have to be undertaken by parties with adequate expertise in the provision of cable systems, financial and other resources. If interest is expressed by any community in having multi-channel cable television a competition for the franchise in such areas would be held.
My Department are not in a position to provide either financial or technical assistance in regard to the provision of multi-channel cable television systems in any area.
In what areas does the Minister intend to provide cable vision?
It would be our hope in time to provide it in all areas. We have started in Cork and in Galway and we expect to move on in time.
Has the work actually started in Cork and Galway, or when does the Minister expect it to start?
We stated that we expect to have multi-channel cable television in Cork and in Galway by Christmas.
Why cannot the same service be provided in the areas referred to in the question?
I am not saying it will not be provided in the areas referred to in the question. I said that if interest is expressed by any community in having multi-channel cable television, a competition for the franchise in such areas would be held. I am not refusing it.
How is the cable television for Cork and Galway being financed and what system in involved?
We are at the contract stage now and it would be premature to say any more.
Will State assistance be involved?
I do not think so.
It will be private enterprise?
I think so. I hope so.
