asked the Minister for Agriculture the plans his Department have for the division of commonage in the West of Ireland; and if he will list the commonages in County Mayo on which it is proposed to commence work during 1981.

The division of commonages in the West of Ireland will, in future, be handled under the programme for western development which was introduced recently. This programme provides for payment of grants towards the cost of fencing and pasture improvement of the individual shares of a commonage where (a) division is deemed to be economically justified in relation to the productivity of the land, (b) the shareholders have agreed to a scheme of division and (c) ownership of the separate divisions has been legally transferred to the individuals involved. It will be a matter for the shareholders themselves to arrange for the fencing of the defined plots and for that reason it is not possible to indicate the commonages on which work is likely to commence during the remainder of 1981.
Commonages in County Mayo for which schemes of division were approved under the procedures obtaining before the western development programme came into effect are listed hereunder:—
