Vol. 330 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tourism Revenue.

5.

asked the Taoiseach the revenue from tourism in each of the last five years and the estimated income in 1981 based on the value of the pound sterling in 1976.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the available information. Data for 1981 are not yet available.

Following is the statement:

Estimated receipts from visitors to Ireland

Current receipts IR£ million

Sterling equivalent £ million

Receipts in constant 1976 prices £ million

Col. (a) shows the estimated receipts from visitors in IR£.

Col. (b) shows the sterling equivalent of Col. (a).

Col. (c) shows the values expressed at constant 1976 prices obtained by deflating column (a) by the consumer price index. Since in 1976 the Irish pound was equivalent to the pounds sterling no further adjustment for exchange rates is necessary at constant prices.

I would like to have the five figures sought in the question.

I can give the figures to the Deputy but they are given under different headings. They are given under current receipts in Irish pounds, the sterling equivalent and receipts in constant 1976 prices. Which one does the Deputy need?

As in the question, the pound sterling.

1976, £183 million; 1977, £238 million; 1978, £282 million; 1979, £321 million and 1980, £319 million.
