Vol. 330 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inner City Renewal.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he has received proposals from the Dublin South City Quay Parish Committee for the renewal of the inner city area; and if any decision has been made on the proposals.

At a meeting which I had with the Save City Quay Parish Committee on 29 September to discuss current problems in the area, the committee presented to me at the close of our meeting a copy of their proposals for a crash housing programme for the Dublin inner city area.

In view of the short period of time that has elapsed since I met with the committee and the extent of the proposals put forward it has not been possible to give the full consideration to them which they deserve. However, I have asked the Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Mr. Fergus O'Brien. TD, to study the proposals and to let me have his Department's comments on them at an early date.

Apart from housing proposals are there any other proposals put forward for the renewal of the inner city area? In particular were some of the suggestions contained in the inter-departmental committee report on this subject taken up in any way?

The proposals which were put to me and which are the subject of this question relate entirely to housing.

The question here says that the Taoiseach received proposals from the Save City Quay Parish Committee for the renewal of the inner city area. Surely there are other proposals there as well as housing. Has the Taoiseach any comment to make on the rejection by the Minister for the Environment of a CPO in that area?

There are eight headings in what was put to me and all of them relate to housing although, in one case, they include a reference to the possible beneficial advantages of a housing programme in terms of the extra money circulating in the area while it is being undertaken. But they all relate to or originate in proposals about housing.

Has the Taoiseach any comment to make on the refusal by the Minister for the Environment in relation to a CPO?

The Deputy should put down a question to me and I will answer it. The Deputy has plenty more questions on the Order Paper. If he wants information I will give it to him.

I asked a question of the Taoiseach and not of the Minister for the Environment.

I have answered the question put to me by Deputy Moore. If the Deputy has a question to put down, let him put it down.
