10.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the up-to-date position regarding proposals submitted by the West Mayo Fishermen's Co-operative for improvements at Darby's Point, County Mayo.

(Cavan-Monaghan): Following a discussion last year between officials of my Department and representatives of the West Mayo Fishermen's Co-operative Society Limited and local fishermen, it was recommended to Roinn na Gaeltachta that they obtain from the Office of Public Works an engineering report on the improvements at Darby's Point sought by the co-operative society. On receipt of the engineering report the position will be fully examined particularly as to whether the scale of fishery operations at the harbour would justify the expenditure that would be involved.

Representations were also made at the time about the flashing sequence of the navigation light and the alignment of the leading lights. These matters were reported to Roinn na Gaeltachta and I understand that they have been attended to.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he has any plans for improving Purteen Harbour, Keel, Achill, County Mayo.

(Cavan-Monaghan): My Department have approved a grant for the dredging of the approach channel at Purteen Harbour. Work at the site commenced last August and is in progress.

During the course of the work it was found that repairs to the pier were necessary and this matter is being attended to. Furthermore, the fishermen have requested that some other improvement works be carried out at the harbour and in this regard an engineering report together with an estimate of cost is awaited.
