Written Answers. - Dublin Crime.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will ensure that there will be regular Garda patrols in the Portrane-Donabate area, County Dublin in view of the dramatic increase in vandalism, drug taking and drug pushing there.

The detailed deployment of members of the force is a matter to be decided primarily by the Commissioner. The precise arrangements for policing particular local areas are made by or in consultation with the local Garda officers.

The Garda authorities have informed me that there has been no significant increase in the incidence of reported vandalism or drug abuse in the Portrane-Donabate area. They say that the area is visited regularly by patrols from Swords station and that it is also covered by special additional patrols operating on an overtime basis, for which this Government have made financial provision, with a view to combating crime and vandalism. The prevention of drug abuse is receiving attention from the local gardaí, assisted by the Drug Squad which has been greatly increased in strength since July last and which is based at Dublin Castle. One person has recently been charged with unlawfully supplying controlled drugs in the area.

The local district officer has indicated that he is satisfied that the existing Garda strength at Swords is being deployed to best advantage and the Deputy can be assured that the policing arrangements for the Portrane-Donabate area will be kept under review by the Garda authorities.
