Vol. 331 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Service.

8.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if tenders for the provision of mobile radio telephones have been assessed; and, if so, when the contract will be placed.

The tenders for the provision of the mobile automatic radio telephone system are at present being assessed, and it is expected that the contract will be placed in January-February, 1982.

9.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number and location of each telephone kiosk in the constituency of Cork North West to be erected from now until the end of 1981 and in 1982.

Eight — at Ballinagree, Ballydaly, Kanturk, Kilbrien, Millstreet, Naad, Taur and Toombridge.

10.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if arrangements are at present in hand to install a public telephone service at Northside Shopping Centre, Coolock, Dublin 5.

It is planned to provide an additional kiosk to serve the Northside Shopping Centre.

There are, however, over 800 kiosks included in the current programme for provision of kiosks throughout the country and it may be some considerable time before the kiosk at Northside Shopping Centre can be provided, but every consideration will be given to the early provision of a second one at this very busy centre.

When the Minister says that every consideration will be given to installing a second line, is he aware that the line to which he refers is in a shop, not in a public place? It is in the Superquinn store. There is no public telephone service in Northside Shopping Centre.

When this question came before me I asked for a report on it. Other Deputies have questioned me about it and I can assure them there will be no delay in providing a telephone kiosk if at all possible and as soon as possible.

The Minister has not answered my question.

At this time the answer is no.

When does the Minister undertake to put the arrangements in hand?

As soon as possible. There is every desire on our part to provide the service.

I am sure the Minister is aware that this shopping centre is used daily by thousands of the public. It is absolutely ridiculous that there is no public telephone service there.

That is fully appreciated, which is why we are so interested in providing this service.

11.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a public telephone kiosk will be provided at Ballinderry Park and Corrib Lawn, Mayfield, Cork.

The provision of an additional kiosk in this area is not regarded as warranted at present and it is not proposed, therefore, to provide one there.

12.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a public telephone kiosk will be provided at Firmount, Donoughmore, County Cork.

The provision of a kiosk at this location is not regarded as warranted at present and it is not proposed, therefore, to provide one there.

The Minister has not replied to Question No. 11.

The Minister has replied to Question No. 11.

13.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a public telephone kiosk will be provided at the shrine on the main N. 16 road in Glencar, County Leitrim, as it was promised two years ago.

It will be provided as soon as possible after the necessary legal formalities have been completed by Leitrim County Council.
