Vol. 331 No. 8

Written Answers. - Prison Plans.

688.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of recent reports that Limerick Prison is to be developed as a high security prison, he will indicate the extent to which the proposal will affect the development plans for a new prison at Portlaoise as approved by the previous Government; and the up-to-date position on the urgent need to provide housing for prison officers and the time scale for the development.

The decision to provide for subversive prisoners in Limerick Prison will not affect development of the new prison at Portlaoise. Building of the new accommodation for single officers and replacement housing for married staff at Portlaoise is well advanced and on target for completion by late 1982 or early 1983.
