Vol. 333 No. 5

Written Answers. - Telex and Telephone Service.

49.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that the telex service to an hotel (details supplied) in Connemara, County Galway has been out of action for over three weeks; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

50.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that the telephone lines to an hotel (details supplied) in Connemara, County Galway are so poor that incoming calls from England are inaudible; and the action he will take to ensure that a satisfactory telephone service is available.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 49 and 50 together.

Cashel exchange to which the Zetland Hotel is connected is in the Clifden charge group and is, therefore, subject to the difficulties experienced by all users in the area which I have covered in reply to other questions from the Deputy. Telex service, which was interrupted on a number of occasions recently by lightning damage, has been restored. Faults on the Galway-Clifden route are a major contributing factor to problems with incoming calls from England. I have arranged that an officer of the Department will visit the subscriber to see if any special measures can be taken to ease his particular difficulties. As I have indicated in reply to other questions from the Deputy, measures to provide an improved service in the Clifden area are being considered urgently.
