Vol. 333 No. 5

Written Answers. - Kerry Unemployment.

295.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if, in view of the loss of jobs at Fry-Cadbury's Factory and at Kerry Co-op Creamery, Rathmore, County Kerry and of the high level of male unemployment in this area, he will make immediate representations to the Industrial Development Authority to investigate the establishment of an alternative industry there as rapidly as possible.

I understand that, arising from a decision by Fry-Cadbury (Ireland) Ltd., to discontinue the production at Rathmore of milk powder and of butter oil, some 24 permanent and 83 seasonal jobs will be lost. The company will, however, continue to provide about 200 full-time jobs at Rathmore. I also understand that there will not be any loss of jobs at Rathmore Creamery as a result of the reduction in employment at the Fry-Cadbury factory.

The IDA are already aware of the developments at the Rathmore factory and will take them fully into account in their efforts to attract further new industry to the areas of Counties Kerry and Cork likely to be affected by the loss of jobs in this case.
