Vol. 333 No. 6

Written Answers. - Enniscorthy Unemployment Requirements.

315.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason the number of days required per week before a person can sign as unemployed at Enniscorthy Employment Exchange, County Wexford is higher than elsewhere; and if any changes are proposed.

The arrangements for signing for unemployment payments are governed by regulations which require daily attendance on every working day in the case of persons living within two miles of the nearest employment exchange or branch employment office, and somewhat less frequent signing in the case of persons living more than two miles away. Relaxations in the normal arrangements have been introduced from time to time where the situation in the local office did not allow of their full implementation, for instance, the size of the live register in the area and the accommodation available at the local office. Daily signing, however, is in operartion in almost half of the Department's 124 local offices and is widespread throughout the country.

The frequency of signing at local offices is kept under constant review and modified from time to time where circumstances so require. In this context it is my intention to have the position at the Enniscorthy local office examined in the near future and I will write to the Deputy informing him of the outcome.
