Vol. 333 No. 8

Written Answers. - Garda Pay.

996.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state from the most recent figures available the average pay per annum including overtime, special allowances and bonuses etc., paid to each of the following categories (a) uniformed garda; (b) detective garda; (c) uniformed sergeant; (d) detective sergeant; (e) uniformed inspector; (f) detective inspector; (g) uniformed superintendent; (h) detective superintendent; (i) uniformed chief superintendent; (j) detective chief superintendent; (k) assistant Garda Commissioner; and (l) Deputy Garda Commissioner; and the salary and allowances paid to the Garda Commissioner.

Separate figures of earnings are not available in respect of the detective branch of the force. On the basis of the most recent available figures for all members, the average pay per annum, including overtime (where applicable) and allowances, for each rank of the Garda Síochána is calculated as follows:

£

Garda

13,000

Sergeant

15,400

Inspector

16,900

Superintendent

16,400

Chief superintendent

18,800

Assistant Commissioner (including surgeon)

22,600

Deputy Commissioner

23,300

Commissioner

28,700

The figures have been rounded to the nearest £100. They are based on salary rates at present applicable and on 1981 overtime earnings (actual earnings for the first nine months of that year and estimated earnings for the last three months).
