Vol. 334 No. 6

Written Answers. - House Extensions.

652.

asked the Minister for the Environment if Dublin Corporation are now authorised to build extensions for tenants who have no bathroom and only an outside toilet; if so, the amount of money that has been provided for this purpose in the current year; when the extensions will be built this year; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Under the provisions of the housing package, which I introduced in May 1981, a housing authority may carry out improvements, including the provision of bathrooms, to their rented houses. The work could qualify for grants of up to £600 under the scheme of house improvement grants. A sum of £1 million has been allocated to Dublin Corporation this year to enable them to commence a programme to equip their substandard rented accommodation with bathroom or shower facilities. The corporation hope to commence this programme shortly.
