asked the Minister for Labour if he will outline his policy on the provision of a State grant to the Irish Management Institute in view of his Government's previous decision in 1980 to phase out the grant over a two-year period.

Government policy in relation to provision of a State grant to the Irish Management Institute has recognised that, in view of the need to raise the standards of Irish management, an Exchequer contribution to the cost of management training has been justified. The payment of the grant was, however, not intended to override the principle that industry itself is responsible for the provision of adequate training for its managers.
The amount of the grant to the institute has been fixed at £435,000 for each of the years 1980-1982 which has involved a reduction in real terms. The grant for 1982 was settled by the previous Government. The position as to a grant for 1983 is at present under consideration and will be decided in the context of the Estimates for 1983.
