Vol. 334 No. 8

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

558.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in installing a telephone under the free telephone rental scheme to a person (details supplied) in County Galway.

It has not been possible to provide service for the person named so far because of the volume of engineering work on hands and requiring attention in the district. It is expected that service will be provided within about six months.

607.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that people who have been sanctioned for telephones have to wait up to four or five months to have the telephone installed, after paying the deposit; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Telephone service is normally provided within three months after an agreement has been signed and advance payment has been collected. Regrettably individual instances have occurred where it was not possible to provide service within the usual period because of unforeseen circumstances such as a cable fault. The number of such cases is small in relation to the total number of connections.

622.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in County Galway.

Within the next six months or so.

627.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider postponing the change in the telephone numbers in County Galway until September or October of this year as it would interfere with the tourist industry during the summer months.

Number changes are planned in three areas of County Galway in the coming months — Ballinasloe, Galway city and Tuam. The number changes at Ballinasloe, which are necessary to facilitate major telecommunications developments in the area, will be implemented on Thursday, 20 May and it is now too late to reverse that decision. In any event, appropriate steps have been taken to minimise inconvenience to subscribers and callers, who should be sufficiently familiar with the new system by the time the tourist season peaks.

The other number changes are scheduled to take place in conjunction with the issue in July of the 1982 Directory, Part Two, in which the new numbers appear. Special arrangements will be made to ensure that any inconvenience caused by the changes will be minimised.
