Vol. 334 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Galway Oyster Fisheries.

777.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the position in relation to the development of the St. George and Clarenbridge oyster fisheries in County Galway.

As I indicated to the Deputy on 13 May 1982, the formulation of a development plan for the St. George Fishery, County Galway, is awaiting the outsome of surveys and feasibility studies which are currently being undertaken.

The development of the Clarenbridge oyster fishery is primarily a matter for the Clarenbridge Oyster Co-operative Society Ltd. who were granted an Oyster Fishery Order by my Department in 1978. An Bord Iascaigh Mhara have in the past assisted the society by the preparation of development plans and the provision of cultch (mussel shell) to facilitate spat settlement on the beds. My Department and BIM will continue to give the society all possible advice and assistance in their development of the fishery.
