asked the Minister for Justice the number of criminal offences reported in each of the years 1977 to 1981, inclusive, for each of the following areas in County Dublin:—(a) Knocklyon/Firhouse; (b) Rathfarnham/ Ballyboden; (c) Dundrum/Ballinteer; (d) Kilmacud/Stillorgan; and (e) Sandyford; and the number of convictions resulting in each of the years from the commission of offences in the areas named.
Written Answers. - Dublin Suburban Crime.
The Garda authorities say that crime statistics are compiled on the basis of Garda sub-districts and that a breakdown of the figures for particular areas within sub-districts is not available. They have supplied figures of indictable offences in respect of each of four sub-districts responsible for policing the areas mentioned in the question, namely, Rathfarnham sub-district which caters for Rathfarnham, Ballyboden, Knocklyon and part of Firhouse; Tallaght sub-district which caters for other parts of Firhouse; Dundrum sub-district which caters for Dundrum, Ballinteer, Sandyford and Kilmacud; and Blackrock which caters for the Stillorgan area. The four sub-districts also cater for areas other than those mentioned. The figures supplied by the Garda authorities are in a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to have circulated with the Official Report. Following is the statement:

Notes:
1. The 1981 figures are provisional.
2. "No. detected" refers to offences in respect of which charges are preferred and in addition offences in respect of which the perpetrators are known but where charges are not preferred because, for example, those concerned are dealt with under the juvenile liaison scheme or are mentally incapacitated or have died.
3. "No. of convictions" do not include cases where the indictable offence was dealt with summarily and where the charge was proved and an order made without conviction. Statistics of such cases for the areas in question are not available but the number of such cases is quite small.
