Vol. 335 No. 5

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

753.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in transferring a telephone for a person (details supplied) in County Meath who applied two years ago.

It has not been possible to provide service for this applicant because of the volume of engineering work on hands and requiring attention in the district.

It is expected that service will be provided within about two months.

754.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a firm (details supplied) in County Meath which employs 20 people and which applied for a telephone over two years ago.

Service will be provided as soon as possible. Regrettably, however, it is unlikely that the extensive linework required can be completed for about a year.

There is no information in my Department to indicate that there are 20 people employed.

755.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when it is proposed to improve the telephone link between Dungarvan (058) and Youghal (024).

The action needed to improve the quality of service between these areas is the provision of additional circuits on the Waterford-Cork route, which serves them both. The provision of these circuits must, regrettably, await the completion of major works planned and in progress in the Cork and Waterford areas as part of the programme for upgrading the telephone service generally. These works include a new digital exchange at Waterford and a major exchange complex at Cork. Part of these works will be completed this year but the desired improvement on the route cannot be effected until the bringing into service of the new Waterford exchanges next year.

In the meantime, a new Lismore-Cork trunk route provided recently will have the effect of reducing the traffic being carried through Dungarvan exchange and the possibility of giving further interim relief on this and other routes serving the Dungarvan and Youghal area is being examined.

It is planned to provide a telephone kiosk to serve the Athlunkard Street area. Because of the big number of kiosks included in the current programme however, it is likely that the proposed kiosk will not be provided for some time.
