Vol. 335 No. 6

Written Answers. - Anti-Discrimination (Pay) Act.

491.

(Waterford) asked the Minister for Labour when he intends to introduce legislation to amend the Anti-Discrimination (Pay) Act, 1974 as requested by the Employment Equality Agency.

As I said in the course of my speech on the Estimate for my Department, I am having a comprehensive review made of the operation and effectiveness of the Anti-Discrimination (Pay) Act, 1974, together with the Employment Equality Act, 1977. As the two Acts are construed together, I feel it logical that the review and any consequent amending legislation should encompass both Acts.

The review will involve detailed discussions with both sides of industry as well as bodies representative of women's interests. It is difficult to estimate the exact time-scale for the introduction of the amending legislation but I would hope to be in a position to have a Bill ready next year.
