With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 540 and 249 together.
The latest information available on employment of disabled persons in the public sector is set out in the attached tables which I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have circulated with the Official Report.
When it was first decided to introduce the 3 per cent quota, a period of five years was envisaged as necessary to achieve the target set. Implementation of the programme began in mid-1980. My Department's aim is to achieve the target in a shorter period than five years where possible.

NOTE: The quota system for public sector bodies provides for possible exclusions from the calculations of particular employments where disabled persons could not reasonably be expected to perform the work involved. Such exclusions have not yet been settled as concentration has been on increasing recruitment of disabled persons. Any exclusions will have to be decided before final quotas for individual agencies are determined.
