asked the Minister for Defence the number of officers by rank who hold the separate appointments of area commander and company commander, and who hold dual appointments; and the duties and responsibilities for area and company commanders.

At present 30 officers hold area commander appointments only, 58 officers hold company commander appointments only and 28 officers hold dual appointments.

Area commanders are responsible for recruitment within their areas and general liaison duties. They also have a supervisory role in regard to training and administration. Company commanders are responsible under the Officer commanding the Battalion for the command, training and administration of the company.
