Vol. 336 No. 7

Written Answers. - Assistance for Disabled.

457.

asked the Minister for Transport the present position in regard to each of the matters referred to by him in the reply to a parliamentary question on 10th March, 1981 as being undertaken at that time to mark the International Year of the Disabled, to assist persons with each of the following handicaps (a) impairment of limbs, (b) deafness, (c) speech impairment, (d) blindness and (e) mental handicap; if he will state in each instance where a matter was then being referred to a committee if the committee has reported thereon; and the action taken on its report.

In accordance with Government policy my Department continue to accept disabled personnel wherever possible. The State bodies under the aegis of my Department continue to bear in mind in their fields of activity the needs of the disabled. In that connection they make every effort to increase employment of persons with physical handicaps and where building or renovation of buildings arise, the opportunity is taken where practicable to cater for the needs of the disabled.

I have not had any occasion to refer a related matter to a committee.
