asked the Minister for Finance if he will give details of the composition, purpose, date of appointment and frequency of meetings of each inter-Departmental committee in which his Department are involved; and if the committees have produced or will produce a written report on their work.

Information regarding inter-Departmental committees chaired by officers of my Department is as follows:

Inter-Departmental Group on the Budget of the European Communities.

1 May 1979.

Representatives of relevant Government Departments as appropriate according to agenda.

Examination of any specific budgetary aspects of Community policies that may be referred to it.

As required in accordance with developments in the Community. It has not met since September 1981.

Three written reports have been produced for the European Communities Committee which is chaired by the Department of Foreign Affairs. Further reports may be prepared if required.

Government Contracts Committee

Representatives from Departments of Finance, Posts and Telegraphs, Defence, and Industry and Energy, and the Office of Public Works and Stationery Office.

To ensure that Government contracts are placed in accordance with contractual procedures established by the Committee.

Every fortnight.

In view of the on-going nature of the work of the Committee, written reports would not be appropriate.

Short-time working week.

March 1981.

Representatives of the Departments of Finance, Industry and Energy, Trade Commerce and Tourism, Social Welfare and Labour.

To investigate the effect on employment of the situation in which persons on short working week may enjoy advantages compared with persons in full employment when account is taken of their pay, social welfare benefits, possible taxation refunds and, in some cases, alternative sources of income.

Four meetings held (infrequently).

Report being finalised.

Social Welfare abuse and public work programmes.

June 1982.

Representatives of the Departments of Finance, Taoiseach, Labour, Social Welfare and Environment.

To examine ways of reducing unwarranted recourse to the social welfare system and of providing training, work and analogous schemes as possible alternatives to unemployment benefit/assistance.

One meeting held.

Written report will be provided.
