Vol. 337 No. 11

Written Answers. - Money-Lending Licences.

429.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of money-lending licences issued by his Department in 1980; the maximum annual interest rate chargeable under such licences; and if he is satisfied with the working of the present money-lending system.

The issue of money-lending licences is not a matter for my Department. These licences are issued by the Revenue Commissioners on foot of certificates issued by the courts and I understand from them that 114 money-lending licences were issued in 1980. In accordance with the provisions of the Moneylenders Act, 1933, a money-lender cannot enforce an interest rate in excess of 39 per cent per annum.

I am not aware of any complaints about the present system.
