Vol. 338 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers

(Waterford): On a point of order, on Thursday last I asked for permission to raise on the Adjournment the closure of The Sunday Tribune and the Daily News newspapers and permission was granted. At 5 p.m. when I tried to raise the matter, due to the rowdy behaviour of some members of the Labour Party the Leas-Cheann Comhairle saw fit to leave the Chair. I would like a ruling from the Ceann Comhairle on this because the Leas-Cheann Comhairle did not formally adjourn the Dáil using the usual words; he simply got up from the Chair and walked out. Am I not, by right, entitled to continue the Adjournment Debate on this question on the Adjournment tonight?

I understand you did not even begin to make your case. I presume you are seeking permission to raise it on the Adjournment this evening?

(Waterford): Yes.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

(Waterford): The behaviour of Deputies in this House last Thursday should be condemned. If a Deputy has permission to raise a matter of importance on the Adjournment and other Deputies engage in the disruptive practice of the Labour Deputies, as seen here last Thursday, it would make a farce of parliamentary procedure——

The Labour Party are as anxious as Deputy Gallagher to raise the matter of the Daily News and The Sunday Tribune newspapers.

Does Deputy Higgins wish to raise the matter on the Adjournment?

I will communicate with the Deputy.

(Cavan-Monaghan): This might be an appropriate time to get an undertaking that Deputies will use doors to get into the Chamber rather than use the Press Gallery.
