Vol. 338 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Cork East Unemployment.

174.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy the latest available unemployment figures for the constituency of Cork East; and the action, if any, he proposes to take in the matter.

I am informed by the Central Statistics Office that there were 3,488 persons on the live register at the employment exchanges in east Cork on 24 September 1982. I am concerned at the level of unemployment in this area and have been assured that the Industrial Development Authority are actively promoting the region for suitable industrial projects.

In recent years the IDA have approved a number of major overseas projects for this region. These include Beehive International Ltd., Fermoy, Doret, Bryant Rubber Ltd., Power Products and International Spike Ltd. in Youghal, and Modular Computers in Carrigtwohill. Many of the jobs in these projects have yet to come on stream.

In addition the IDA have approximately 14 acres of land and a 12,000 sq. ft. advance factory in Youghal, four acres of land in Fermoy and 21 acres in Mallow available for new industrial projects. The IDA also have planned a 21,000 sq. ft. advance factory to be constructed by private finance for Mallow.
