Vol. 338 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Lead Processing Plant.

221.

asked the Minister for the Environment the steps being taken by his Department or other agencies to monitor the lead processing plant operated by a company (details supplied) in Tallaght, County Dublin; and the steps being taken by his Department to prohibit the excessive emanations of smoke over the Kilnamanagh area of Tallaght so that the fears of the inhabitants of this area of lead pollution will be allayed.

This is a matter for Dublin County Council as planning authority and sanitary authority for the area. I understand from the council that the company in question had experienced difficulty in meeting the conditions of their planning permission in relation to air emissions but that recent monitoring has shown that emission levels have now been brought within the stipulated limits. I am also informed that monitoring of land levels in the ambient air in the vicinity of the plant indicates that these levels have not been significantly increased by reason of the presence of the plant. A complaint regarding smoke emissions from the plant received recently is being investigated by the council.
