Vol. 338 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Donegal Fisheries Facilities.

30.

asked the Minister for Transport if he is satisfied that the radio stations and facilities available to fisherman off the Donegal coast are adequate.

I am satisfied that the facilities currently provided for fishermen off the Donegal coast by the coast radio station at Malin Head are adequate. The coast radio station provides marine radio communication for all vessels, including fishing vessels, within its radius of operation, which is 500 nautical miles from the station. In addition to facilitating the exchange of messages and telephone calls, the station also maintains a continuous listening watch on the marine distress frequencies for both radiotelephony and radiotelegraphy.

To facilitate vessels equipped only with VHF, a marine VHF coastal network is currently being set up. The first of the stations in this new network will provide a service off the Donegal coast, and will come into operation shortly.
