Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Galway Water Supply.

201.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his Department will proceed with the planning of stage 3 of the mid-Galway water scheme as a matter of urgency so as to extend the Galway city water supply to service the needs of Athenry town which is now one of the main growth centres in the county.

Galway County Councils preliminary proposals for Phase 3 of the Mid-Galway Regional Water Supply Scheme included provision for serving the town of Athenry. In a letter to Galway County Council dated 9 March 1982 my Department recommended that contract documents should not be prepared for the scheme in view of the lack of major group water scheme demand and the long term nature of the proposals to augment the water supply to Athenry.

Short-term measures to improve the water supply to the town of Athenry were also proposed in the county council's submission of the 20 November 1981. As part of those measures improvements costing £4,000 were carried out on a borehole supply source for the town, under the council's small schemes programme for 1982.
