Dáil Éireann debate -
Thursday, 3 Feb 1983

Vol. 339 No. 8

Referendum (Amendment) Bill, 1982: Order for Second Stage.

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Referendum Acts, 1942 to 1979.

I move:

"That the Second Stage be ordered for Tuesday, 8 February 1983".

We are very grateful to the Government for facilitating us on Tuesday last. Because we have to finish the Dáil reform debate on Tuesday, we are asking that the debate on the referendum will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday morning prior to the budget.

That is a matter to be discussed between the Whips.

Could I ask for further clarification on the question of the Referendum Bill? The decision of whether this House agrees or disagrees with the amendment has not yet been made so how can the Dáil consider the passing of a Referendum Bill?

I suggest that the Deputy consults the Bill. We are fixing a date for the Second Stage of the Bill and the point that the Deputy is making could be discussed then.

Question put and agreed to.
