Written Answers. - Crime Statistics.
Limerick East): The following table gives particulars of the number of indictable offences recorded, overall Garda strength and the number of hours overtime worked by the ranks who are entitled to payment for overtime in the three areas referred to in each of the years 1980 to 1982, with the exception of the crime statistics for the year 1982 which will appear in the Commissioner's crime report for that year which is in course of preparation and which will be published after it is presented to the Government. As regards the information sought under heading (ii), the position is that records are not maintained in such a way as to provide particulars of the detailed deployment of manpower in a particular year and the compilation of such information would involve a disproportionate amount of Garda time. The Deputy will appreciate that all members of the Garda Síochána are regarded as being involved either directly or indirectly in the fight against crime and the allocation of manpower to particular duties at any one time depends on the availability of resources, local circumstances and the demands on Garda services.
Population figures are not available in the form requested by the Deputy. However, estimates of the total population served by the Garda Síochána, based on the 1979 and 1981 Census figures, are as follows:—
