Vol. 340 No. 11

Written Answers. - Barring of Spouses.

491.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of spouses barred each year under section 22 of the Family Law (Maintenance of Spouses and Children)

Acts, 1976 and 1981, and the Family Law (Protection of Spouses and Children) Act, 1981.

, Limerick East): Figures for the number of spouses are not available.

The number of barring orders made in the District Court in respect of the legal years 1978-1981 are set out hereunder. The figures do not necessarily correspond with the numbers of spouses barred because there can be more than one order against an individual spouse in a given year and in fact up to 1981 the maximum period for a barring order was three months.

Statistics for the years prior to 1978 were not compiled in such a way as to give the number of barring orders made in those years, while the 1982 figures are not yet available.

It would not be possible, except by the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of staff time, to determine the number of barring orders made in the High Court.

Circuit Court statistics in relation to barring orders are being compiled and I will forward them to the Deputy as soon as they are available.
