asked the Minister for Education if she will state in respect of a second level school which already employs an art teacher, the number of pupils needed in order to have a fully equipped and specially designated art room among its buildings; whether the size of art room varies with the enrolment and what the various sizes are in proportion to the various enrolment bands; the furniture regarded by his Department as appropriate to each size of art room; and if it is the Department's policy to approve the construction of a new second level school without an art room to replace an existing school where an art teacher is already employed.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 497 and 498 together. The question of providing specialist rooms, including an art room, in the schedule of accommodation for a post-primary school is one for the individual school authority, subject to compliance with the overall area limits for the building. The size of an art room does not vary with overall enrolment of the school.

A list of approved furniture for an art room is attached.
