Written Answers . - Tax Rebates .

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in relation to the payment of a refund of income tax to a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny, the reason he was requested to forward the same information on three occasions; when a refund will be paid; and when a refund of income tax for purchase of pension service will be paid.

: I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that a cheque for £596.54, in settlement of a claim to repayment of tax deducted on arrears of superannuation contributions, was issued to the taxpayer on 28 May 1982. It has now come to light that that cheque does not appear to have reached him and arrangements are being made to enable a duplicate cheque to be issued to the taxpayer as soon as possible.

The taxpayer ceased employment on 27 November 1981 and lodged a claim to repayment of tax on 15 January 1982. The inspector of taxes wrote to the taxpayer for certain details of other income which were necessary to enable his tax position to be brought up to date. The full details required were not supplied initially by the taxpayer and further correspondence was necessary before the inspector was in a position, in November 1982 to review the liabilities for 1980-81 and 1981-82.

The reviews revealed an underpayment of £43.86 for 1980-81 and an over-payment of £10.61 for 1981-82. This leaves a net underpayment of £33.25, which will be collected by reducing the individual's tax-free allowances for 1983-84.

: I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the taxpayer ceased employment on 25 February 1983 and submitted a claim to repayment of tax on the grounds of unemployment on 15 March. A cheque for the amount of the repayment due, £215, will be issued to the taxpayer shortly.

: I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that there is no further repayment due to the taxpayer. A review of the taxpayer's liability for 1981-82 showed an overpayment of £86.16 but this was set off against an amount of £89.61 which had been over-refunded to the taxpayer for the year 1980-81. This position has been explained to the taxpayer by the inspector of taxes.

: I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the inspector of taxes has certified a refund of £146.94 in this case and a cheque for that amount should reach the taxpayer shortly.

: I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that they have been told by the employer that a refund of £741.93 was made in this case on 27 January 1983. This amount represented all the tax which had been deducted from his earnings from his present employment up to that date. On 3 February 1983 an adjustment was made to give credit for a further sum of £97.83 deducted from previous earnings. No further repayment is due in this case.
