Vol. 341 No. 4

Written Answers . - County Offaly Schools .

187.

asked the Minister for Finance the present position in relation to the provision of a new national school in Killeigh, County Offaly; if he has received the approval of the Minister for Education for this school; and, if so, when he expects work to commence on it.

: On 28 September 1982 the Department of Education indicated to the Commissioners of Public Works that it had decided that a new school should be provided at Killeigh, County Offaly, and that the manager of the school should be allowed to engage his own Architect to prepare the plans for the project. Subsequently, the Department informed the commissioners that the manager was not in a position to appoint an architect and it accordingly became necessary for the commissioners to handle the case. The site for the proposed new school has been surveyed but because of the large number of cases on hands it has not yet been possible to commence the preparation of sketch plans. It is hoped to do this in about a month's time. It is too early to say when building work will commence.

asked the Minister for Finance the present position in regard to the extension to Cloghan national school, County Offaly; when his Department received each request from the Department of Education to carry out this work; and when work will commence on the extension.

: The proposal to extend Cloghan national school, County Offaly, was first raised by the Department of Education in April 1980. Sketch plans were completed by the Office of Public Works in September 1980 and the Department of Education sanctioned a grant towards the cost of the project in December 1981. Because of the large number of schools projects at various stages of planning it was not possible to commence preparation of contract documents at that point. The contract documents have been completed and the approval of the Department of Education to the invitation of tenders is awaited. It is too early to say when building work will commence.
