asked the Minister for Social Welfare the sum of money paid annually to unmarried mothers by way of the unmarried mothers' allowance since 1973.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of applicants and recipients of the unmarried mothers' allowance in each of the last ten years.

: I propose to take Questions Nos. 268 and 269 together.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

The Unmarried Mothers' Allowance Scheme was introduced on 5 July, 1973.

The number of applicants for and recipients of this allowance and the amounts paid out in each of the years since then were as follows:
