Vol. 341 No. 9

Written Answers . - Reduction of Fine Petition .

914.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will accede to the petition to reduce the fine imposed on a person (details supplied) in County Limerick which Deputy O'Dea made to his predecessor.

, Limerick East): Ministers for Justice, down the years, have as a matter of principle declined to say, in reply to Parliamentary Questions, whether or how they might exercise powers of remission or commutation of a penalty imposed on a person convicted of a criminal offence. I am satisfied that this practice is well justified and I think it necessary to adhere to it.

When I have made a decision on the petition to which the question relates, I will inform the Deputy of the position.
