Vol. 341 No. 9

Private Notice Questions . - Release of Concern Workers in Ethiopia .

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the steps being taken to secure the release of the two Concern workers kidnapped in Ethiopia; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

: We have expressed our grave concern about the two Irish relief workers abducted in Ethiopia to the authorities of that country. As Ireland is not itself represented in Addis Ababa, we have had our representations made by the British Embassy there in the first place, urging that the Ethiopian authorities do everything possible to ensure the safety and rapid return of the two Irish girls. The Ethiopian authorities have shown themselves co-operative and promise to take action urgently, and to provide any information that comes available as soon as possible. We are concerting our efforts with those of other countries whose citizens were abducted during the same incident.

: I welcome the statement of the Minister and his expression of concern. I should like the Minister to clarify that every effort will be made by the Government, and himself, to use all channels open to them to secure the release of the two workers.

: I am glad to give the Deputy, and the House, that assurance.
