Vol. 342 No. 1

Written Answers. - Taxation of Farmers.

703.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the additional 78,000 farmers brought within the income tax net as a result of this year's budget, he will indicate the number of extra staff sought by the Revenue Commissioners to handle this additional work; and the number of these extra staff that have been sanctioned by the Department of the Public Service.

The Government have decided that over 100 additional staff are to be redeployed from other Department offices to the Revenue Commissioners for a period of two years to assist with the new work arising from the proposals in this year's Finance Bill, which includes additional measures for the taxation of farming profits. The additional numbers of farmers will be brought into the taxation system in a structured way and accordingly the allocation of these additional staff to the taxation of farmers is being left, in the usual way, to the Revenue Commissioners.

704.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in regard to Table 2 in the supplement to Table 85 of the Revenue Commissioners Report for 1980 and the reference to a sample survey of 620 finalised farming cases for 1979-1980, the number of farming cases for 1979-1980 that have been finalised to date.

The information in relation to finalised cases contained in Table 2 of the supplement referred to was obtained by means of an ad hoc limited survey for 1979-80. Presumably the Deputy wishes to be provided with information in relation to any extra cases for 1979-80 which were finalised since Table 2 was compiled. This information is not available and it is not considered that the reactivation of the survey to provide the information, which would be of very limited value, could be justified.

The annual report of the Revenue Commissioners for 1981 will contain a revised version of Table 1 giving updated figures for farmers and other categories of Schedule D taxpayers for 1979-80 and comparative figures for 1980-81.
