Vol. 342 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Harbour.

15.

asked the Minister for Finance if he proposes to make funds available for the development of Roonagh Harbour, County Mayo.

Funds are not available at present for the development of Roonagh Hartbour.

Is the Minister aware that plans have been prepared for the development of the harbour and that the existing structure at Roonagh is in a rather serious condition? Would the Minister endeavour to ensure that funds will be made available as soon as possible to have work commenced there?

First of all, the commissioners prepared plans which were not accepted by the county council. Since then the commissioners have prepared plans for an alternative scheme comprising a new pier, storm wall approach road estimated to cost £450,000. These were accepted by the county council. We have asked for an undertaking from the county council that, when works are completed, they will undertake to maintain this pier. We have not received a reply and there can be no question of allocating money this year on that basis. I will ensure that it is considered favourably in 1984.

Does the Minister of State have the information in his brief as to when the county council were notified or asked for approval?

In September 1982 the commissioners submitted plans of the proposed scheme to the county council and sought an undertaking that they would maintain the works when completed. The county council have not replied.
