Vol. 342 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meat Imports.

2.

Mr. Leonard

asked the Taoiseach the tonnage of pork and bacon imported in 1982; and the tonnage of broiler meat imported in 1982.

Dún Laoghaire): Imports of pork and bacon amounted to 6,400 tonnes in 1982. While broiler meat is not identified as such in the external trade statistics, the term can be equated with “Dead poultry —fowls (including cuts)”, imports of which amounted to 5,300 tonnes in 1982.

Mr. Leonard

Can the Minister of State tell me what steps the Government are taking to ensure that there will not be so much imports and that we will be competitive enough to meet the market?

The Deputy will appreciate that this is purely a statistical question and now that he has got the answer he can avail of some other occasion to put the question that he is putting now.
