Vol. 342 No. 7

Written Answers. - Phibsboro' (Dublin) Water Pressure.

638.

asked the Minister for the Environment when adequate water pressure will be provided for the entire Phibsboro' area, Dublin.

The provision, operation and maintenance of a public water supply in Phibsboro' is primarily the responsibility of Dublin Corporation, as sanitary authority for the area.

Dublin Corporation have said that while at the moment pressures in the Phibsboro' area are adequate, it is known that, in the recent past, pressures were unsatisfactory. This situation is partly due to the general deficiency in the overall supply system, which requires that pressures be kept down to conserve the supply. This stringent pressure control tends to affect elevated areas like Phibsboro'. The corporation and county council's current work programme will provide an adequate supply of water for the entire city area within the next few years. Significant improvements have already been made, and others are anticipated this year and over the next number of years, as various projects are brought to fruition.

The problem at Phibsboro' is compounded by inadequacies in parts of the local distribution system, particularly in the mains in the North Circular Road. These are included in the corporation's work programme for replacement in the short term.
