Vol. 342 No. 7

Written Answers. - Mayo Saw-Mill.

686.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if it is intended to improve the saw-mill facilities at Cong, Claremorris, County Mayo; if he will give details of the proposed development; if the new development will result in any increase in employment in the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Work commenced last year on a range of on-going measures aimed at improving the efficiency of this saw-mill. The erection of a timber drying shed and a new mechanical workshop as well as the recladding of the mill, is nearing completion. Drainage and yard resurfacing are also in progress. Further developments envisaged over the next few years include the resiting and overhaul of the dust-plant and the provision of improved access to the mill. It is too early at this stage to say if these measures will lead to increased employment in the locality.
