Vol. 342 No. 12

Business of Dáil.

A Cheann Comhairle, could I ask very briefly for your co-operaction? I suppose I am speaking more to my own colleagues than to anybody else. We worked out an agreement on the seven parts of the Bill. I should like to remind the House — and I am sure you have been doing it for the past few days — that in Part I of the Bill there are 46 sections. After 15 or 16 hours we are on section 11 of Part I. There are some major sections in the first part of the Bill, really vital ones about which people outside the House have been speaking, and on which there has been a good deal of debate outside the House.

It would be terrible if we were to spend over 30 hours discussing the Committee Stage of the Finance Bill, sitting late at night and spending an inordinate amount of time on some of the early sections, without reaching the major ones. I should like to ask my own colleagues more than anyone else to use the Committee Stage as it should be used, and not to make long repetitious speeches about things which are not as important as some of the other sections which may not be reached. The first Part of the Bill is a major part. At 4.30 p.m. all amendments in the name of the Government which have not yet been debated will be taken and will form part of the Bill. I do not want us to be prohibited from debating sections which might be totally objectionable to us.

I know Deputy Ahern is very busy, but he might consider either staying here or putting in an odd appearance.

I want to reinforce what our Chief Whip has said.

We are wasting time now.

Sections 16, 17, 18 and 25 are most important.
