Vol. 343 No. 2

Written Answers. - European and Local Authority Elections.

374.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will confirm that local authority elections will be held in 1984.

375.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will confirm that local authority elections will be held in conjunction with elections to the European Parliament in May 1984 to avoid the added expense of elections being held on separate days.

376.

asked the Minister for the Environment when a decision will be made on the date for the European elections.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 374, 375 and 376 together.

The Council of Ministers, following consultation with the European Assembly, have fixed the period from 14 to 17 June 1984 as the period within which polling at the Assembly elections shall take place. The selection of a polling day within this period is a matter for the individual member states. The matter is at present being considered, as is the question of the date for the local elections due also to be held in June 1984. No final decision has yet been made.
