asked the Minister for Justice the number of male aliens married to Irish females who have applied for Irish nationality in the year ended 31 December 1981 and in the period 1 January 1982 to 31 May 1983; and the nationalities of those male aliens.

Limerick East): The number of male aliens married to Irish females who applied for Irish nationality in the year ended 31 December 1981 is 43 and in the period 1 January 1982 to 31 May 1983 is 91.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has any proposals to change the present legislation which allows a female alien to automatically register for Irish citizenship on marriage to an Irish male; and if he intends to change the legislation so that male aliens may apply for Irish citizenship on marriage to Irish females and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick East): When replying to questions by the Deputy on 15 February 1983 (Dáil Debates Volume 340, column 28), I indicated that I proposed to consider at an early date the provisions of the law that are mentioned. Pressure of other business has prevented me from doing so up to now.
