Vol. 343 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Farm Development Service.

7.

asked the Minister for Agriculture when proper office accommodation will be provided for the farm development service at Tuam, County Galway.

The premises in Tuam in which it is proposed to relocate the local farm development service staff of my Department require some structural alterations. The staff will be moved into the new office as soon as this work is completed.

Could the Minister give us any information as to when this will be? I understand that he is going to visit Tuam shortly and I would like him when he goes there to visit the offices of the farm development services as they are in very bad condition and consequently need steel props to preserve them in tact. The staff and the farmers who use them are nervous about entering the building.

The Deputy will realise my difficulty in putting a date on the completion when I tell him that the matter is in the hands of the Board of Works.

Could the Minister give us a projection?

I would not dream of giving a projection or attempting to do so.

Is the Minister talking about a new building?

No, it is an existing building. It is at the same address, the Mall, Tuam.

My supplementary question is only slightly relevant but maybe the Minister would answer it. Would he give consideration to the use of the Munster Institute building in Cork for the farm development services?

(Interruptions.)

That was a good try.

Is the Minister aware that at least two buildings in Tuam are available to relocate the service?

I am sorry, but we have identified one certain building and that is being worked on by the Board of Works.
