Vol. 343 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - IDA Reports. Fruit and Vegetable Processing.

15.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he has noted a recent IDA report on the fruit and vegetable processing industry; and, if so, the action he proposes taking to correct the situation.

I am aware of the report referred to. The fruit and vegetable industry in this country, and throughout Western Europe, has experienced severe difficulties in the adverse economic conditions prevailing in recent years. The problems confronting the industry in Ireland are analysed and examined in an interim report entitled Processed Vegetable Industry in Ireland which was drawn up by the Horticultural Development Group and published by my Department some months ago. That group is carrying out a more detailed study of the subject and their further report is expected in three months. When I have received it I shall be considering what action it is open to me to take to encourage viable developments in the industry.

Mr. Leonard

This is a very depressing report on an industry in a country which is ideal for the production of vegetables and fruit. Would the Minister not agree that it could not be worse if it was a report covering fruit and vegetable production in the middle of the Sahara Desert?

That is argument and is not for the purpose of obtaining information.

Mr. Leonard

How can it be argument if the Minister agrees?
