Vol. 343 No. 5

Written Answers. - Killarney Improvement Schemes.

366.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will arrange with Kerry County Council to carry out a major improvement scheme on the Loreto Convent Road, Killarney, in view of the serious flooding of dwellinghouses in the vicinity following heavy rainfall; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand from Kerry County Council that they do not accept responsibility for the flooding which occurs in private properties at Loreto Convent Road, Killarney. As the road is a county road, the planning, execution and financing of works on this road are entirely within the discretion of the council.

I understand that the council's 1983 programme provides for some works on this road, which will be financed from the block grant allocation.

367.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will arrange with Kerry County Council to carry out a major improvement scheme on the Muckross Road into Killarney, County Kerry, between the Muckross Hotel and the Gleneagle Hotel, which is one of the most dangerous and heavily trafficked stretches of roadway in the country and where there were fatal accidents in recent times; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The carrying out of the proposed road improvement scheme is primarily a matter for the road authority, Kerry County Council. I understand from the road authority that they have completed the design of the scheme and that they are at present involved in negotiations for the acquisition of the land required.
